Featured Brewery of the Month: Captain Lawrence Brewing Co.

After working at some of the countries top breweries, including Sierra Nevada, Scott Vaccaro decided to open Captain Lawrence Brewing Co., in Pleasantville, NY back in 2006. He started out with a small 15 barrel brew house and would bring kegs of beer down to New York City in his Volkswagon Jetta to spread the flow of beer out to the masses.

From those humble beginnings in Pleasantville, Scott’s New York craft beer started getting a lot of attention, and demand for his liquid began to grow. In 2012, Captain Lawrence moved into its new digs in Elmsford, NY, almost tripling the production space with a 40 barrel brew house and larger fermenting tanks. But more important was the installation of the bottling line. Bottled Captain Lawrence beer was few and far between, but because of the new installation, Scott was finally able to bottle his great ales to sell in retail stores. The bottling line brought on much more production, as well as new states, like Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, wanting the brewery’s famed ales.

The true passion for Scott was brewing a very different style of beer known as sours. Done only in small allotments since the brewery’s opening, Scott wanted to expand on these delightful tart ales. In 2014, the brewery took on more space with new equipment dedicated for these wild fermented brews. Huge Foundres (large oak barrels) were brought in to let these beers age and take on an even greater flavor from the wood itself and from fruit added to the liquid. In the small amount of time it has taken Captain Lawrence to grow to where it is now, we can only imagine what great things can happen for the future!

The only thing “effortless” about this summer seasonal is how it drinks. Domestic and imported malts take a backseat to the loads of American grown hops that are dumped into the kettle. Dry-hopped for mouthwatering aroma with Mosaic and Palisade hops, and infused with natural grapefruit flavor to add to the refreshment. Sour'd in September

This one of a kind festival started back in September of 2014 and featured some of the best sour ales made in the country. And while the first event was a small size, it has now grown into one of the best beer festivals in the tri-state area. This year we will be featuring 75 different breweries from all over the country, many of them based right here in the great state of New York. With over 100 sour beers being poured from the taps, you are going to have the most eclectic styles of beer all in one place…
